Martin Luther’s Foundation of Sand

The nation of Israel was bound together in covenant with God under the leadership of Moses.  After receiving the Ten Commandments written on stone the Lord spoke to Moses personally and predicted that one day He would raise up another prophet like Moses who would speak the word of the Lord to the people:

I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.  (Deut. 18:18-19)

This prediction of a coming “Prophet like Moses” was fulfilled to the nation of Israel by the coming of Jesus Christ.  The late Grant Jeffrey wrote an excellent overview of this prophecy saying that there were “at least fifty elements and events” that were parallel, showing that Jesus of Nazareth was indeed a prophet like Moses.

Jesus was sent by God to speak the very words of God to the people.  Jesus Himself said,

When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him… If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.   (John 8:28-32)

The words of Jesus are vitally important to the life of a Christian.  As the previous post made clear, the most important set of teachings given by Jesus are those known as the Sermon on the Mount, found in Matthew 5-7.  These teachings became the very foundation of what it meant to be a Christian for the first few hundred years after the death of Christ, and were often memorized by new believers as their first catechism. They knew that just as they believed in the atoning death of Jesus they also had a responsibility to actually follow what He had to say. During His life Jesus had told His disciples…

But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.  (Matt. 23:8-10)

At the very end of Jesus’ earthly ministry, just before He ascended to Heaven, Jesus gave a final command to His disciples:

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.  (Matt. 28:18-20)

The disciples were faithful in fulfilling Christ’s commands and in the decades following Stephen’s martyrdom all twelve of the Apostles carried the Gospel of the Kingdom into the surrounding nations, not only to Greece and Rome, but also to Britain and Spain, Egypt and Ethiopia, and even to Armenia and India.  They taught about the Kingdom of God and they taught about Jesus our King, who gave up His life for us so that all people might enter into that Kingdom. They also taught that citizens of God’s Kingdom, once born again into the Kingdom, have a responsibility to live by the teachings of their King, a good portion of which are found in the Sermon on the Mount.   Jesus Himself had concluded this particular Sermon by saying,

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.   (Matt. 7:24-27)

For the past several years the Lord has been speaking to me, personally, about FOUNDATIONS, through my own studies and even through the dreams I have been experiencing.  I was particularly impacted by Hurricane SANDY striking the command center of the USA (Manhattan Island and New York City) in October 2012.  The USA is certainly now (and perhaps always was) a nation built on a foundation of sand.  I wrote about this in my post Prophetic Warnings to America.

But first judgment will come to the house of the Lord.  As Christians we have the responsibility to be salt and light to a fallen world.  We must demonstrate the reality of the Kingdom in our lives today by actually LIVING according to the commands of our King. Today we simply do not do that, as was highlighted in the last post, “The Anti-Church,” by Roger Hertzler.  We think we “believe” all the right things about Jesus, but then we ignore His commands, smugly thinking that our eternal salvation is secure and that our personal obedience is optional or unnecessary.  Jesus directly warned people who think like this when He said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 7:21).

Why has the American Evangelical Church, and indeed virtually all of Protestant Christianity, so easily ignored the most basic and foundational teachings of the King of Kings?  Well, I think it is because that is simply how we have been taught!  Our theology is an out-of-control puffed-up mess.  We have done our best to pore over the Scriptures with magnifying lenses and fine-toothed combs, trying to find out what we need to “believe” regarding every disputed fine point of doctrine and straining out every gnat, yet we have swallowed the camel!  For Jesus, for the Apostles, and for the early Church it was not what we “believed” on all the various theological points that mattered most in the life of a Christian. No indeed! For the early Church, for those new Christians who had been baptized and taught the bare essential basics of “what to believe,” what mattered most in day-to-day life was how we live! And it is precisely “how we live” that is supposed to set citizens of the Kingdom of God apart from the world, causing the Church to shine in the world like a city set on a hill.

So how exactly have we been so deceived to reach this point where the majority of so-called evangelical “believers” live their lives in a way that is indistinguishable from non-believers?  I think that much of the blame can be traced back to the root of protestant theology, namely, to Martin Luther the “Father of the Reformation.”  He established a foundation that taught that what we “believe” is infinitely more important than how we live.  He actually taught that how we live is completely irrelevant when it comes to the question of our personal salvation.  By teaching this he ignored, and in fact contradicted, the teachings of Jesus Christ!  Obedience to Jesus is not optional in the life of a Christian!  Jesus was crystal clear on this matter!

Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying,
he shall never see death (John 8:51). If ye love me, keep
my commandments (John 14:15). He that hath my
commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth
me (John 14:21). If a man love me, he will keep my
words (John 14:23). He that loveth me not keepeth not
my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine,
but the Father’s which sent me (John 14:24). If ye keep
my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I
have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his
love (John 15:10). Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever
I command you (John 15:14).

And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his
commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth
not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in
him (1 John 2:3-4).

The problem with Martin Luther was that he made the teachings of Paul the center and foundation of his gospel, and placed the teachings of Jesus on the side.  If Luther did turn to Jesus he always made sure to interpret Jesus in light of what he thought he understood about Paul.  But the Apostle Peter warned us against doing this!  In 2 Peter 3:16 Peter said that Paul’s writings are sometimes hard to understand and they are easily twisted.  That is exactly what Luther did!  He didn’t understand Paul and he twisted what he said.  However, the teachings of Jesus are NOT hard to understand, and they are NOT easily twisted!  Jesus was a straight shooter, and He taught in simple language, often using parables to drive His points home.

If you get your basic theology from Jesus then the teachings of Paul can be understood properly.  If your view of Paul contradicts what Jesus clearly taught then you need to reassess your view of Paul, rather than twist the words of Jesus.  This is most clearly evident when it comes to the Salvation Theology of Jesus.  To put it simply, Jesus taught that eternal life was obtained through an obedient love-faith relationship with Him.  We enter into the Kingdom by faith alone, which is a gift of grace, but then our place in the Kingdom is confirmed through our faithFUL obedience to Him as citizens of His eternal Kingdom.  Not everyone who enters the Kingdom is guaranteed to receive eternal life.  Many will enter the Kingdom by faith, but then be cast out at the judgment after Christ returns.  Jesus teaches this in the Parable of the Sower (Mark 4, Matthew 13, Luke 8), the Parable of the Dragnet (Matthew 13:48-50), in the Parable of the Vine (John 15), and in many other places in the Gospels.

Turning back to Martin Luther, we can read in his introduction to the book of Romans that his gospel was based on the teachings of Paul.  Keep in mind that this intro was published and distributed throughout Luther’s sphere of influence in Europe during the Reformation back in the mid-1500s:

“This letter is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel. It is well worth a Christian’s while not only to memorize it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul. It is impossible to read or to meditate on this letter too much or too well. The more one deals with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes. Therefore I want to carry out my service and, with this preface, provide an introduction to the letter, insofar as God gives me the ability, so that every one can gain the fullest possible understanding of it. Up to now it has been darkened by glosses and by many a useless comment, but it is in itself a bright light, almost bright enough to illumine the entire Scripture.”   (from http://www.ccel.org/l/luther/romans/pref_romans.html)

Luther taught that the book of Romans was the single most important piece of New Testament Scripture, and yet not once did it include a quote from any of the teachings of Jesus.  The teachings and parables of Jesus are primarily found in the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.  John’s gospel was written last and did not repeat a lot of what had already been established. John’s Gospel is a spiritual Gospel, but nonetheless it remained true to the earlier Gospels and to the Salvation Doctrine of Jesus, especially as found in John 15:1-17. Now take a look at what Luther said in his preface to the entire New Testament.

“From all this you can now judge all the books and decide among them which are the best. John’s Gospel and St. Paul’s Epistles, especially that to the Romans, and St. Peter’s first Epistle are the true kernel and marrow of all the books. They ought rightly be the first books and it would be advisable for every Christian to read them first and most…  John’s Gospel is the one, tender, true chief Gospel, far, far to be preferred to the other three and placed high above them. So, too, the Epistles of St. Paul and St. Peter far surpass the other three Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

In a word, St. John’s Gospel and his first Epistle, St. Paul’s Epistles, especially Romans, Galatians, and Ephesians and St. Peter’s first Epistle are the books that show you Christ and teach you all that it is necessary and good for you to know even though you were never to see or hear any other book or doctrine. Therefore St. James’ Epistle is really an epistle of straw, compared to them. For it has nothing of the nature of the Gospel about it.” (from http://www.scrollpublishing.com/)

Martin Luther says that the Gospel can be understood entirely by only reading the Gospel of John, 1 John, 1 Peter, and Paul’s Epistles. Luther says that this is “all that is necessary and good for you to know even though you were never to see or hear any other book.” But this eliminates the Sermon on the Mount!  Jesus Himself said that the true foundation for citizens of the Kingdom of God was found in obeying the commandments of the Sermon on the Mount!

Luther’s understanding of the Gospel is without a solid foundation. No wonder that Protestantism is splintered into a million pieces! No wonder most evangelical protestants today ignore what Jesus actually taught, thinking their eternal life is guaranteed by “belief alone”! Now I understand why Jesus predicted many unfaithful servants perishing at the judgment with much weeping and gnashing of teeth! (See Matthew 25:30) These aren’t “unbelievers,” they are “unfaithful believers” who are denied eternal life in the Kingdom!

The bottom line is that Jesus is not looking for “believers,” He is looking for “followers.”  He is not looking for those who follow Paul, and He is not looking for those who follow Moses. Jesus is looking for those who will repent, change their worldly ways, pick up their cross and follow Him.  Now THAT is true revival!

  1. Thanks for that post Peter. I was raised a Lutheran. At 30 I was saved by the grace of God while reading Isaiah 53 and the Gospel of Matthew, (I was reading segments from OT and NT at same time. It was like the Ethiopian eunuch’s conversion in Acts 8. Anyway, I have always thought that the mainline Protestant churches were at least as dangerous as Roman Catholicism if not more deadly because of the more subtle deceit going on. The letter to the Sardis church in Revelation I believe speaks to the warning of Jesus to these CINOs(Christian in Name Only) congregants. Sardis was a church that was proud of it’s Name and it’s history and it’s Safety from invaders. When I was a Lutheran, I had a Name. I was safe because I had been baptized as an infant and then confirmed by the church. I was proud of my founder, Luther as well. Your assessment was right on. Keep on Keeping On brother.

  2. Been thinking about this…………….. Certainly agree that once we are saved we must do as much as we are able to glorify Christ by how we live our lives. I am, however, struggling with the possibility you raise that salvation can be lost (?) or did I misunderstand that ? My understanding, is that salvation cannot be lost, but that we may still be ashamed at the Great White Throne Judgment if we did not live for Christ by our actions. At that time, when the crowns of reward are given out, our works will be burnt up. Instead of receiving a crown for our works, we will receive only shame — we will still, however, be saved. Please explain.

Thank you so much for all your writings — can’t get enough.

  3. Not sure what your definition of “salvation” is, because salvation is a process that is past, present and ongoing, as well as future, but you are probably talking about eternal life. Can we lose our eternal life after we have been granted it? That’s a strange question to ask because none of us have been granted eternal life yet, except for Jesus. That is something determined in the future. But Jesus is clear that you can become a branch on the Vine, and then later be cut off. He also said that you can enter into the Kingdom, but later be cast out of it. I’m not too clear on all the deeper theological issues. I just try to follow the simple and clear statements of Jesus that deal with entering into the Kingdom, remaining in the Kingdom, and then finally inheriting eternal life. I think the bottom line for Jesus is that there is no formula for receiving eternal life. The Catholics had a formula of sacraments, whereas the Reformers offered a formula of “faith alone” to give the people an assurance of eternal life. Jesus, it seems, offers no formula, only a relationship that is a mix of faith and love proven by obedience. Your eternal life is therefore assured only as much as you are committed in your relationship to Jesus.

  4. Hi Peter, Thanks for responding. I do see where you are coming from. I’m going to need to study this out, because it’s very important for me to understand. And time, must be very short. ” Proven by obedience” sounds like works to me; I’m an ex Catholic so I reject works all day long. 🙂 Our salvation, and I thought, Eternal life, is about Christ’s work at the Cross, and by His resurrection; not by anything we do to earn it. Please give me some time to try and study this out.

As long as I brought up ‘resurrection’ may I ask something else? Your Giza Discovery is brilliant. Nimrod has to be the only candidate for Antichrist. All pagan religions teach resurrection of their gods. The symbolism for this is all over Art History.

OK, why would God, allow anyone but His son to be resurrected – or will it be more of a satanic reanimation? Please explain; I am so tired of friends that insist the AC is George Bush, BO, Prince William, Hillary, Juan Carlos….. it really does go on and on. My main reason for seeing Nimrod as AC is Revelation 17, it really does sound like a resurrection. I’m grateful for your study on this, because it made me stop trying to figure out who he/it is. We are supposed to spend our time looking for Christ – Right ?

  5. Mr. Goodgame, Through the years I have read much of your material. I came across this web-site in the last couple of years. doctrine.org It is by Dr Don Samdahl and there are many articles which address some of the issues which you also touch on in your article. I hope the link comes through, this particular one is named Jesus vs Paul. If you take a glance at the other titles very interesting. http://doctrine.org/?page_id=1327 God Bless, James Staten

  6. Very convicted and edified by these last two posts. your explanation of these Reformation influences and quotes from Luther really do make perfect sense to me. I have lived under and tasted the Paul-centric paradigm for much of my life, and it amazes me that Luther would say such things about the actual recorded words of Jesus, but amazed more that such an attitude has survived and thrived thru the centuries since….

I suppose it’s not that surprising considering how our hearts are cut to the core by the simple teachings of Christ…

I also just finished reading your historical outline of the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and Western influence in the middle East, and boy, do I feel like my grasp of everything going on today in places like Egypt, Syria, Iran etc, just increased about a hundred fold… I seriously

  7. but we can never be saved by our works. salvation is a GIFT. the Holy Spirit is given to us at the moment of our salvation and we can never be lost again. now is not the time to put fear into people. all that the father gives Jesus will be saved. not just those who try and do their best after they are saved.

we all sin after salvation. if we can lose our salvation, we have no blessed hope. we have nothing.

  8. Amen, Peter! Great article!
I want to commend you for your stand in the truth. How is it possible to believe God and yet not follow his commandments? Isn’t this the very meaning of believing- trusting, obeying, doing, with our whole heart? The Gospel that is preached today promises a false sense of security without dying to self. If we are to be raised up in Christ, death and burial must take place first. If we continue to walk in sin, then what exactly are we saved from?

Luther, in his conviction to leave the Catholic Church-works only, went to the other extreme – faith without works, and, therefore, really never separated himself completely from the religious system. It is not surprising that Luther diminished the importance of Hebrews and James, even desiring to omit them altogether from the Bible, because they did not fit his doctrine. The lack of administering the whole counsel of God is the staple today. We have plenty of doctrine, but lack instruction, correction, and reproof.

Jesus warned that the Kingdom of heaven would be like the mustard seed that grew unnaturally into a tree in which the birds of the air (agents of Satan) come to lodge. It is the infiltration of deceitful doctrines in the church that lead many astray. The Apostle Paul warned that in the last day there would a great falling away- a great apostasy from the simple Truth. (2 Thess 2) Many, also, would depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils (1 Tim 4:1), and the attitude “peace and safety” would prevail amongst professing believers.

Sadly, many professing Christians today are ignorant of the true nature and character of God, due to the lukewarm Gospel being preached today. Words have lost their meaning over the years and have diluted God’s perfect Word. His commands, conditions, and warnings today are not taught with weight and urgency. Instead of being a “fire and hammer”, His Word has become “lies and lightness” to the hearer (Jer 23).

Truly, judgment must first begin in the house of God…and if the righteous are scarcely saved where will the unrighteous appear? He will begin by first cleansing His own sanctuary ( Ezek 9:6) Heavy warnings like this are given us as true followers of Christ. We need to carefully and honestly examine ourselves in light His Word, for without holiness no man shall see God. ( Heb 12:14)

God bless you, my brother.- MK

  9. You can’t fall away from something if you “never” had it.

    falling away…….”apostasia”, “apostasy”

What is apostasy?…….abandonment, desertion, forsaking, the act of giving something up,relinquishing.

Scripture is very clear that the coming of Jesus Christ will not occur until first apostasy and the man of sin (The Antichrist) is unveiled. (2 Thessalonians 2:3)

If it’s not possible for a Christian to abandon or relinquish his/her faith then there can be no apostasy (falling away). If we read what scripture says, then a believer and follower of Jesus Christ can desert their faith in Jesus Christ.

Some will say…….”Well they never really were a Christian, they never had him in the first place.”

How can it be apostasy…….”If it isn’t apostasy”?

How can we fall away from something we never had at all?

The apostate church is the crown jewel of The Adversary.

    Hebrews 3:12-14

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in [departing] from the living God.

But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; [lest any of you be hardened] through the deceitfulness of sin.

    For we are made partakers of Christ, [ if ] we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast [unto the end];

  10. Bruce, I am not trying to pick a fight, but I must respond to you reply. I believe there were six bibles before the KJV, which translated this as “the departure”. Dr. Kenneth Wuest, whom I believe was affiliated with Moody Bible College was considered by some as one of the better Greek Scholars of the 20th Century. This is a debate which has been going on for a long time, but apparently this word has two basic meanings, and one of these is Physical Departure. An example I have heard is like getting on a bus, and being physically transported from one place to another. A mode of transportation. My quick take if I may? 1 Corinthians 10:32 lists by Paul, who writes to the Body of Christ, about three groups of people: Jews, Gentiles, and the Body of Christ. Many mysteries where revealed to Paul, which had never been revealed before in scripture. Paul reveals about Israel. He reveals about the Body of Christ never revealed anywhere in scripture until the Risen Lord gave it to him. He reveals the catching away of the Body of Christ, which was a mystery until the Lord tutored him on the subject. The Resurrection had been know throughout scripture from Job to the Sadducees, but not the revelation of the catching away. During this dispensation 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 is being presented to Jew and Gentile alike. Accept (Believe) the Gospel and you become a “New Creature” in Christ. It has been said many times but to have a good grasp on end time eschatology one must understand Daniel 9:24-27. The 490 year curse was placed on the Jewish people and the City of Jerusalem. Daniel was a Jew writing about his Jewish brethren. Paul speaks of “when the fulness of the gentiles be come in” to the Body of Christ, perhaps when the last Gentile comes into the Body of Christ the catching away takes place? What do you have left after the catching away, the Jews in Jerusalem and an Unbelieving Christ Rejecting Gentile world, which says let’s destroy them and take the Land and Jerusalem. Without a doubt two things which start a fight today in the Church or Out is that the Jews are Occupiers, the Lord didn’t give that Land to them forever, and there is no catching away. Jesus isn’t really the “Blessed Hope”? I apologize in advance I probably sound like a know it all? These are just some highlights (the short version) God Bless, James Staten

  11. Words of Paul. Words of Jesus. I thought Jesus directly inspired Paul to preach and to write. I would have thought that the early Christians under the Apostles and Paul would have had very detailed teaching not just basics. Also Luther is partly responsible for present apostasy! Surely leaders and theologians of the main churches over the last century have been responsible for that.

  12. There comes a point at which we need to understand the basic principal that IF we have TRUE faith it WILL be manifest in our life and obedience to Chirst. However, be careful about trying to draw hard and fast outward lines as Jesus Christ is the one who judges the love relationship of the heart. Paul bends over backward to continually warn the Church to examine their lives and to work out their salvation with fear and trembling he also warns the galations about accomplishing anything in the flesh. I came to Jesus in the BANG of an instant and my husband came over a period of time. Falling in love has NO FORMULA!!! And please never forget that salvation is a miracle of the Holy Spirit drawing just as the Christian walk is a miracle lived out in the life of a person through the power of the Holy Spirit. A tiger can NOT change it’s stripes. if there is a litmus test of where the depth of a relationship stands – its likely the PRAYER LIFE. Just as no relationship is deeper than the level of communication… Your walk with
Jesus will never be deeper than your prayer life. Your Church will only be as effective as the prayer behind it. How those things are measured is up to the King, but we certainly KNOW when its lacking.

  13. Dear brother Goodgame:
Just wanted to comment on your article “Martin Luther’s Foundation of Sand. I too have had problems with today’s churches. Churches used to believe in a sovereign God. A God who was in control of all His creation. The splinters in the protestant church started with who is in charge. Is God like the watchmaker who created everything and is now waiting to see how we make it turn out as the Preterist’s believe? Are we in control of salvation and Gods creation or is God. Luther and the Apostle Paul held to the fact that salvation came from God and God is sovereign in all things. Predestination used to be the common faith of the churches. This salvation comes in the form of grace which is unconditional mercy. I believe God is the beginning and finisher of our faith. Salvation is being born again. That was Luther’s point. There are those that believe if WE ACCEPT JESUS, we will be saved. They believe salvation is our choice rather than God’s.I believe when we are born again, we become new creatures and our eye’s and ears are opened to the Word of God much like Paul’s conversion. GOD DID IT. God blinded Paul so his eyes might be opened. Remember, Paul was on his way to persecute Christians.
Can our works ever be good enough that we deserve to be saved, born again, or go to heaven. According to Paul, his righteousness was as filthy rags. If our works or obedience warrant whether our salvation is confirmed or lost, what did Jesus die for. I thought our unrighteousness was laid upon Him and His righteousness was placed upon us. It is His perfectness that secures our salvation, not ours. We are all sinners and God demands perfection. That is why Jesus is the only way to be saved.
In your article, you stated new Christians were taught by the church what to believe. Which church are we supposed to believe? I believe we are taught by the Holy Spirit. This was a time when people were converting from John the baptizer, who was teaching repentance and baptism, which was a Jewish custom of being cleansed from sin. Once Jesus died and rose from the grave, salvation moved from the law to grace. It was difficult at first because most of the apostles were Jewish and still believed you had to be circumcised, eat kosher food, etc… Peter finally had it revealed to Him that times had changed. God’s grace through Jesus was the answer. Not the law. God’s law would be fulfilled through grace.
The law and obedience was the directive given to the Jews. You see how that worked for them. Jesus called many of them vipers and there were few that believed Jesus was the Messiah. That is because they were blinded by God to the truth. I believe God chose the Jews to show what our human efforts get us. It just leads to self-righteousness. I do not think God loves us for our righteousness and obedience. He loves us because He chose us before the foundation of the earth and through His grace and mercy, He causes us to be born again. He changes us into new creatures. He changes our heart of stone into a heart of flesh. We learn to serve out of love rather than duty. When we fall, He chastens us as a Father, yet he still loves us as a Father. We are not to judge others by their works, only God knows their heart and He is the judge, not us.
People always want to feel like they are in charge but there is a way that seems right to men but their way leads to destruction. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and He will direct your path. Jesus spoke about salvation in Matthew 19. With men things are impossible but with God all things are possible. I believe God has a plan and it’s a good one. I am a predestination believer who stands alone against a world full of freewill believers. Sovereignty vs freewill is a whole different topic yet, if I have to choose who is in charge, I’m going to choose God. What is my responsibility? Because God loves me, I love Him back. That is known as reconciliation. Reconciliation is like a marriage.

    Luke 10:25-27
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.

  14. Just now reading this Mar 16, 2014. Commenting on James Staten’s response to Bruce, both on Sept 27, 2013, James is correct in his clarification regarding 2 Thess 2:3 “departure” versus “apostasy.” Millions are clueless regarding this mistranslation, Granted, apostasy will precede the coming of AC. But that is not what Paul speaks of here. Departure, i.e., the body of Christ translated to become His Bride is the meaning. The correct grammar means the same thing as in the verse where Paul asks that the thorn be removed from him.

True believers will not be here to recognize AC so there is no point in trying to determine who he is. He is the Coming Prince of whom Daniel speaks. See Dr. Ron Bigalke on 2 Thess 2:3; also, as James stated, see Wuest, etc. See Galatians 4:16 “Have I Become Your Enemy Because I Tell You the Truth?” newsletter. My Father told me that we must “Depart” before the covenant can be confirmed. I was raised on the bible says, the bible says, and when I reached 18 I stayed drunk for 20 years, because I didn’t want to hear it anymore.I knew it was true, but I didn’t want to hear it. Praise the Lord, the Hound Dog of Heaven outran me!!!! I have been studying seriously for the last 22 years. People inside the “Church” and also outside the Church are clueless what’s coming on this world. Jesus is coming for the Body of Christ..Look Up, Brother…Jimmy Staten

  16. Sister, I’m sorry assuming you were a man instead of a Lady. I did think about it before I sent it, but wasn’t sure how to address it. I tried sending an e-mail to the e-mail address you gave it wouldn’t go through? Things are definitely popping. Jesus is Coming and I believe soon!!! My e-mail is JLStaten@aol.com

  17. Peter G, thank you so much for your articles on Paul, Jesus, and the law, plus this piece on Luther. Helped me sort out my feelings on the HRM (which remains incomprehensible to me). I tend to think that Luther wasn’t as fancy-free about works/sin/obedience as he is sometimes depicted, but just as we sometimes are reacting to hyper-grace in these times, he was reacting to Rome in his. No mere human ever has the full perspective. Nonetheless, obedience is the chief mark of a true believer and we must never lose sight of that as Christians or diminish its importance.

  18. Thanks for the comment David. Yes you are probably right about Luther. Regarding obedience and salvation, I think that it is relationship that Jesus desires, and if we think we can have a true relationship with Jesus without obedience we are fooling ourselves. God bless.
